[NEW] The 1st Semester (Spring/Summer) 2025

Objectives

This program is designed to enhance the fundamental English communication abilities of engineering students. It not only focuses on language proficiency but also motivates them to engage in a diverse range of courses. This encourages them to participate in internship abroad and other Intercultural Education Programs, where they can apply to have further development of their newly acquired skills.

Program Details

The classes are taught by qualified and experienced teachers. CEED cover the tuition fees, but students should note that extra costs may be incurred for a textbook, depending on the course chosen.

Course Details

English Writing Structure(Teacher:Mr. Stephen BURROW)

This course aims to improve your writing skills for IELTS and TOEFL (iBT). Using the materials for the exam tasks, it focuses on building academic writing style at the international level and on learning the structure of writing, including use of paragraphs and how to express your ideas and opinions logically and accurately. Feedback from the teacher helps you to improve your writing to achieve higher scores in the exams. These skills can also be used as a basis for English academic papers. Everything is instructed in English during the class by a qualified native English teacher, which provides practice for Speaking and Listening.

Practical English for Engineers and Scientists(Teacher:Ms. Ivy LIN)

This course focuses on Academic English for science and engineering and aims to develop your skills for explaining your research/field appropriately and effectively on internship abroad or at international conferences. It focuses on learning useful expressions and relevant terminology while practising how to explain processes or systems, write business emails including studying grammatical rules, such as tense. It helps you to improve your communication skills as an engineer involved internationally.

English Discussion(Teacher:Mr. Stephen BURROW)

This course focuses on improving your discussion skills, developing your vocabulary and appropriate English expressions while exchanging opinions on a variety of topics, such as world news and culture differences which broadens your horizons to increase your awareness of countries around the world. It can also be an effective preparation for the Speaking exams.

English Communication(Teacher:Ms. Ivy LIN)

This course focuses on practicing English conversation in various situations in daily life and learning common words and useful phrases, including pronunciation and intonation. It aims to improve natural communication skills by doing role-play or playing games in a friendly atmosphere. Each week, a couple of students give a short presentation and receive feedback which helps you to learn appropriate words, expressions and the presentation delivery. If you want to speak English but don’t know how, this is the best opportunity for you to learn it.

Requirements

  1. Enrollment is open to graduate students in the Graduate School of Engineering, Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, and Graduate School of Chemical Sciences and Engineering (supervised by Faculty of Engineering staff), as well as sophomores, juniors, and seniors in the School of Engineering.
  2. Students must notify us in advance if they are late or absent from a lesson, or if they need to cancel their enrollment in a course.
  3. Students are expected to make an effort to prepare for the class or do assignments if necessary.
  4. Students are required to respond promptly to any surveys in order to improve our programs. They are also encouraged to actively participate in other CEED activities.
  5. Students must understand that the personal information provided will be used solely for purposes of communication, course management and enhancing the services of our programs.
