Credit Recognition Using e-Learning Materials

Overview

Students who have difficulty in attending regular face-to-face classes due to special circumstances, like part-time students (with jobs) and credited auditors (i.e., students taking one or more courses of their choice) living in remote locations and students who are away from campus studying abroad, on internship programs or job hunting, can earn credits by using CEED’s e-learning resources as “ancillary materials for their coursework” and replace a part of regular face-to-face classes with them or as “e-learning courses” and replace all regular face-to-face classes with them, based on the judgment of the course instructors.

Eligible persons

Students in the Graduate School of Engineering, the Graduate School of If they are determined to have special circumstances by the course instructor(s).

Applicable courses

Courses (subjects) approved for credit recognition are the courses on the list of broadcast courses that can be used to earn credits.

Course period

Regular face-to-face classes are offered either in the first (Spring / Summer term) or the second (Fall / Winter term) semester as described in the Student Manual. Accordingly, course registration must be completed according to the period when regular face-to-face classes are held, although e-learning materials are always viewable. Decisions on credit recognition (submission of grades) are also made only once in an academic year in principle.

Procedures with course instructors

Students seeking credit recognition are required to obtain the approval of the course instructor(s) by contacting them directly and informing them they would like to earn credits using e-learning materials.

*Since there is no way for teachers to distinguish students trying to earn credits using e-learning materials from regular students attending face-to-face classes, students are required to contact teachers directly and obtain approval from them.

Course registration and application to use the e-learning system

After obtaining the approval of teachers, students properly submit course registration. Application via the e-learning system is always available bur course registration period is determined. Students must submit course registration by the specified deadlines.

At the same time, students must complete application to use the e-learning system via the CEED’s e-learning system according to the following flowchart (application to use the e-learning system (for credit recognition)).

Use for completion, grading and credit recognition

Course instructors should provide adequate guidance to students taking their e-learning courses in order to ensure they have the same quality of learning environment as offered at regular face-to-face classes, such as question-and-answer sessions. For example, offering opportunities for students to meet them, promptly respond to questions from students, giving them assignments or having them submit reports, or putting them through the semester-end exam.

Course instructors are also responsible for viewing management, which is equivalent to class attendance management for regular face-to-face classes. As reference data for course viewing management, they can reference grade data, which show how much of the videos students have viewed.

Students’ academic performance must be assessed stringently based on the authority and responsibility of the course instructors in a way that guarantees the same quality as regular face-to-face classes.

Application to use the e-learning system (for credit recognition)

The e-learning application period is not limited. Students can apply for enrollment in courses regardless of the course registration period if they obtain the approval of the course instructor(s).

This section provides a brief overview of the application procedures for viewing e-learning content.
For more information on the procedures, see the system user manual (for students).
