Cooperative Education through Research Internships

Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology starts the program called “Cooperative Education through Research Internships” as a trial run from the academic year 2021, and as a full-scale implementation from the academic year 2022 with the aim of developing practical skills that can be also applied in global competition through the joint education between industrial institutions and universities for graduate school students.
Cooperative Education through Research Internships is a domestic internship program for a long term (2 months or more) with allowances. The program qualifies for credits based on the performance evaluation. Accordingly, the Graduate School of Engineering and the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology also start the program. CEED actively supports engineering students who participate in this program.

What is Cooperative Education through Research Internships?

  • The program is open to graduate school students with basic knowledge and ability in research.
JSPS Research Fellowship for Young Scientists (DC) and international students can also be eligible, depending on the conditions.
  • An employment period is at least 2 months with allowances (comparable to entry-level salaries).
  • The program qualifies for credits in the regular education curriculum (“Internship (Cooperative Education through Research Internships) (2 credits)”).
  • Evaluation documents and certificates are given to the students through feedback interviews with the host companies.
  • The host companies can use the evaluation of the students’ performance in internships for their recruitment selection activities.

Benefits of Participation

  • Students can gain first-hand experience of what skills and abilities companies and society expect from doctoral students and what they expect from research in academia, which will be helpful when considering post-degree careers.
  • The program helps students broaden their career options.
  • Students will have opportunities to revalue their specialized knowledge objectively.
  • Students can develop practical skills that can also be applied in their academic career.
